Board Game Assignment Development Diary

Development Diary for

For this class assignmentNathan Kealy, Sean Maher, Dane Brien, Zach O Beirne and Alan O'Grady all got togheter to create a board game. Our first ideas we came up were that we wanted a co-operative board game rather than competitive. We wanted the game have Role playing game elements

We went through many idea's like making our game with Lego and adding plastic trees seen in games
such as War Hammer and War Machine.
We discussed themes and we wanted to give it such themes as Medieval,Greek mythology and even myths and legends with Dragons and monsters.

We wanted to make the game playable by 2-4 players and we discussed adding playing cards and giving each number and symbol a specification. For example clubs could be a battle symbol and hearts could be a vitality symbol.
In the end we decided to scrap the roleplaying aspect because it was hard for the players to remember all the rules and we wanted the players to be able to pick up the game and understand how to play right away.

Also, in the end we decided to make the game for only two players.

We then start making decisions on whether we would use dice or coins to enable the player to progress throughout the board. Then we came to the conclusion we would give each player a six sided dice and whatever they rolled would be the amount of spaces the player moved and each turn a player would draw a card and whatever card they drew depending on the number and symbol would affect their progress in the game negatively or positively.

Each turn the players take turns rolling a die and moving that amount of spaces and then drawing a card. That card will let you move forward, backwards, move the other player or draw another card depending on what you draw.

The goal of the game is to reach the finish line. So both players start on opposite sides of the board and their aim is to reach the other players starting square first to win the game.

This is most of the basic elements that went into making the board game. This development diary is to show all major elements in the decision process of making the game. This is not definitive rulebook but a good solid synopsis of the game. It has been a unique experience making a board game and gave us all an insight on how these mechanics of making a board game can translate over very well making a video game.
